Message of support ahead of SCOTUS decision on DACA

University leaders reaffirm commitment to supporting "DACAmented" students awaiting a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Dear students,

As we await a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court on the status of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, we want to assure you that whatever the outcome, we are here for you.

One of the core goals of the University of Utah is student success—for all our students. We do this in two primary ways: By providing access to the state’s flagship institution and then helping our students complete their educational goals. The division of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, together with our Dream Center, play key roles in this mission through the support and resource services they provide our “DACAmented” students. Our commitment to this vital center, and to you, is unwavering.

We want you to know we value you as students and will continue to do everything we can to assist you in pursuit of the life-changing benefits of a college degree. We are fortunate to be in a state that has consistently acted in support of immigrants and refugees, including enacting legislation that supports access to a higher education.

We know the wait for this decision has been difficult and want to be sure you are aware of the resources available now and once the ruling is issued.

Due to COVID-19, Dream Center staff are working remotely but are available by telephone and online. Students needing support or advising can contact Dayan Castañeda Muñoz, our graduate assistant, at castaneda.dayan@utah.edu or Emilio Manuel Camu, our interim director, at emilio.manuel.camu@utah.edu to schedule a virtual meeting.

The University Counseling Center also is offering support between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. by telephone and through secure video conference appointments. Contact the Counseling Center at 801-581-6826 to schedule an initial intake appointment or the 24-hour Crisis Line at 801-587-3000. More information about Counseling Center services may be found here.

Staff enrolled in the Employee Health Care Plan have access to counseling through the Employee Assistance Program.
