Resources for commuting resolutions

Ways to make your daily commute more healthy, sustainable and cost-efficient.

The beginning of the year feels like a fresh start and the best time for creating new habits and routines to improve your overall well-being. Some common resolutions, such as saving money, increasing physical activity and making sustainable choices, can easily be accomplished by adjusting your daily commute. Here are some resources that will make your daily commute more healthy, sustainable and cost-efficient.

Download UTA’s transit app

Riding UTA instead of driving will help you save money, reduce CO2 emissions and increase physical activity. The transit app is UTA’s official trip planner and is an essential tool for passengers riding public transportation. In addition to trip navigation, passengers can also use the Transit app to receive notifications about detours and service disruptions.

Download TransLoc

To simplify and enhance our student commuters’ experience, Commuter Services consolidated the campus transportation resources into one app. As a result, the TransLoc app now provides services for both Campus Shuttle and SafeRide passengers. Through this app, Campus Shuttle riders can track all shuttles lives, find stops and view estimated arrival times. Additionally, students may use the TransLoc app to request a SafeRide on weeknights from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Utilize short-term parking options

Students enrolled in online classes may find that they only need to park on campus occasionally rather than daily. For them, short-term parking options are an affordable alternative to the semesterly permit.

  •  Day pass: A Day Pass allows you to park in a ‘U’ or ‘A’ lot for a day. The Day Pass price ranges from $5 to $16, depending on the time of day you’d like to park. This option is ideal for students who need to park on campus a couple of days a week. Students may purchase a day pass online through the parking portal.
  • Kiosk lots: Students may pay the $2 hourly rate to park in the Union Lot, Marriott Library Lot, Business Lot or Student Life Center Lot. Kiosk lots are a great option for students who need to park on campus a few hours a day or week. Visit the kiosk machines located within these lots to begin a session. You may also pay for your parking session directly on your phone by scanning the QR code displayed on the kiosk machine and following the prompted steps.
  • PayByPhone stalls: Students may pay the $2 hourly rate to park in PayByPhone stalls located in several lots on campus. Parking in a PayByPhone stall is an excellent choice for students looking for hourly parking in various locations throughout the U. Download the PayByPhone app to find a stall and begin a session.
  • Share a permit: You may share a parking permit with another student by linking multiple vehicles to one parking permit. Keep in mind, only one vehicle from the shared permit may park on campus at a time. Payment cannot be split between multiple accounts, meaning one individual must pay for shared permits.

Park at the Guardsman Lot

Popular lots like the West Stadium Lot, Eccles Broadcast Lot and Merrill Engineering are likely to reach capacity by 9 a.m. However, parking in lots farther from main campus isn’t a disadvantage — it’s a great way to increase your daily step. Luckily, the Guardsman Lot, located on 500 South and Guardsman Way, typically has several stalls available throughout the day.

Visit the Campus Bike Shop

Bicycling is not only a sustainable alternative to driving, but it’s also a convenient way to make exercising a part of your daily routine. So if you have a bike, take it to the Campus Bike Shop, located at 413 Campus Center Dr. (across the street from UMFA). Our full-service bicycle repair shop provides repairs and maintenance services at affordable rates. For more information, email bikeshop@utah.edu or stop by on Thursday and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
