Health resources for students

Do you know where to go for help on campus?

There are a number of health resources available to students and faculty to treat a myriad of both physical and mental conditions. It doesn’t matter if you imagine you injured your ankle while playing sports, or your throat kills, or you might’ve been feeling a little depressed lately, help is available.

Student Health Center

Located at the Madsen Center, the SHC provides services from family practice, sports medicine, travel and women’s health. Those with Student Health Insurance (international students are automatically signed up) have a subsidized health fee and only have to pay a $10 copay. Don’t have this insurance? That’s OK! The SHC has lower prices than other clinics in the community. This would be your first point of reference for anything health-related.

University of Utah Health Urgent Care

This is where to go for illnesses and injuries: cough, cold, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, UTI symptoms, simple orthopedic injuries and mild lacerations. If you think your conditions are more serious, consider checking this table.

Got an itch in your throat that won’t go away, or a case of bad indigestion? You can take a quick shuttle to Urgent Care from any point on campus. It is located right next to the Emergency Room at the University of Utah Hospital. There are also other convenient off-campus locations in Sugarhouse and Farmington.

Center for Student Wellness

The CSW provides health education and advocacy services that include the victim-survivor advocacy program, health and wellness workshops, trainings and HIV and STI testing. The victim-survivor advocacy is confidential and free of charge support for U students, faculty or staff who have experienced interpersonal violence, such as rape, sexual assault, stalking, harassment, dating or domestic violence.

Virtual visits

Virtual urgent care allows you to speak with a care provider at the comfort of your home; if you have any questions about your symptoms, such as allergies or the flu, all you need is a phone or laptop and a stable internet connection. Virtual urgent care is available seven days a week, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., 365 days a year and only costs $49.99 (make sure to check if your insurance covers this).

University Counseling Center (UCC)

The UCC offers confidential individual, group and couples counseling services and psychiatric medication services to eligible U students. Requirements for eligibility include current enrollment to the U with at least six credit hours for undergraduate students and at least three credit hours for graduate students. Individual counseling services follow a succinct therapy structure that is limited to 12 sessions yearly. If students feel they are in need of more sessions, the UCC offers referrals to off and on-site resources.

The UCC offers immediate sessions with its crisis services for U students, staff or faculty. The initial counseling session is free of charge with following counseling fees ranges from $5 for group/workshop sessions to $30 couples counseling and $12 for individual sessions.

Mindfulness Center

Located at the Student Services building, this resource offers free 30-minute sessions and workshops on meditation, self-care and cognitive coaching for U students, faculty and staff.  There is no registration required and you can attend these workshops as many times as you like. Plus, there are massage chairs. Who doesn’t like that?

Women’s Resource Center (WRC)

The WRC offers brief “feminist multicultural framework” counseling services for U students, staff and faculty. Fees for individual and couple counseling services are based on a “sliding fee scale.” Free support groups are available for individuals who self-identify as women. The WRC also offers services to male individuals as well.

We want to ensure that your needs are met and that cost shouldn’t be an impediment. Your health is paramount to us; money comes second.
