The University of Utah is implementing mandatory IT security measures in an effort to maintain the highest level of safety over student and university data. Please review this message thoroughly as it impacts access to student tools, including Campus Information Services (CIS), Canvas, UMail, Box, and more.
What is Duo 2FA?
Beginning Tuesday, February 22, 2022, University Information Technology (UIT) is enabling Duo Security two-factor authentication (2FA) by Cisco Systems for access to university web applications and services. Duo 2FA adds an extra layer of security by verifying your identity through two methods as you log in, helping to deter unauthorized individuals from accessing your accounts and data as a result of phishing schemes and other scams.
This change affects all students attending the University of Utah. For more information about Duo and 2FA, please visit this UIT Knowledge Base article.
You will receive an email 24 to 48 hours prior before UIT activates the 2FA requirement for your university accounts and resources.
How do I get started?
To prepare for this change, if you haven’t already done so, please set up a Duo 2FA account via the Duo Management Portal before the implementation date. The Duo authentication process requires a smartphone or tablet to send a push notification to your device for approval. You may also purchase a Duo token for $23 through the University Campus Store if you do not have a smartphone or tablet, or do not want to or are unable to download the app. After the 2FA requirement has been activated for you, you’ll have a one-time login grace period allowing you to access university applications without Duo. You will then be prompted to use Duo 2FA or set up a Duo 2FA account.
I need help setting up Duo 2FA.
