In celebration of national Pride Month, The University of Utah is participating in the Utah Pride Center’s Pride Story Garden. June 3-7, 2021, ticketholders are invited to Washington Square in downtown Salt Lake City to view 20 unique, interactive outdoor exhibits, each related to the theme of “Our History, Our Stories, Our Communities.” The Story Garden is part of a week of Pride Week 2021 events hosted by the Utah Pride Center.
The U’s Pride Story Garden entry is a series of panels highlighting how the University has honored and celebrated Pride Week at the U through the years. Pride Week at the U is an annual event honoring LGBTQIA+ histories, cultures and lives. In addition to archived posters and artwork from several past Pride Weeks, the exhibit features the Queer Memory Map, inspired by Lucas Rochell’s interactive digital project, “Queering the Map.” It features an interactive map of the U’s campus with pins marking the spots where queer experiences have unfolded—from first dates to coming out to a roommate. A QR code on the display allows visitors to add to the memory map digitally and the LGBT Resource Center will then transfer the information to the permanent book located in the LGBT Resource Center at 409 Olpin Union on the U’s campus.
