Exchange programs: Your gateway to the world

Go see the other side of the world and pay resident tuition while you do it.

While the University of Utah has a wide variety of learning abroad programs available to students, exchange programs are a less utilized, yet more affordable option for many students.

Take the U’s exchange agreement with the University of Sydney (USYD) for example it combines high academic rigor with excellent co-curricular opportunities in a culturally diverse environment, providing a signature experience for U students. On top of that, USYD is consistently recognized as one of the best universities in the world and was ranked No. 42 in 2020 according to QS World Rankings. If that is not enough to convince you, take current student Isabel Roberts’ word for it:

“The University of Sydney itself is a great school with professors and students from all over the world that make the actual school part of the exchange program really worth it and easy to find courses that will apply to your degree,” said Roberts.

Roberts is a chemical engineering student at the U and spent her entire sophomore year studying at USYD as an exchange student through Learning Abroad. She took courses to fulfill requirements for her engineering major while also taking general education courses to stay on track for graduation. USYD excels across a wide range of subjects and disciplines, from arts to architecture, engineering to education, geography to technology. It has 35 subjects ranked in the top 50 in the world. That is, it is a great compliment to your degree here at the U.

Roberts’ interests extended beyond the classroom as well. “The city is amazing and close to some of the most beautiful natural flora and fauna you’ll ever see along with quite a few world-renowned landmarks. It’s also a great jumping-off point to see a ton of the world.” In fact, many students who participate in learning abroad exchange programs value the opportunity to gain new personal and academic perspectives, while also experiencing and learning about a culture outside of Utah and the United States.

The University of Sydney is not the only high-quality exchange agreement that the U has. The U partners with 33 different universities around the world to offer you the opportunity to complete coursework in an immersive environment with local students at some of the most prestigious universities. Coursework is flexible and you can complete major, minor and general education requirements. One of the great benefits of participating in an exchange program through the University of Utah Learning Abroad is that you pay the equivalent of the U’s resident tuition.
