Student Media at the University of Utah has two primary missions: first, to engage, provoke, inspire and connect campus by telling the compelling stories of the University of Utah community; and second, to provide a hands-on experiential learning environment in media where students can put into practice skills and ideas from the classroom.
Student Media annually awards $300,000 in scholarships to students. Opportunities to get involved are listed below.
Internships: Get started in Student Media by fulfilling an internship. Interns act as content producers for Student Media. Recipients of internships act in a variety of roles in our news, radio, digital and marketing divisions. Positions include reporters, radio hosts, photographers, graphic designers, writers, programmers, developers, marketers, events, analysts, etc.
Staff Contributors (Scholarship Position): Already involved, looking to take a step up from an intern position, or have significant experience already? staff contributor recipients are the primary content producers for Student Media, completing more complex and a higher amount of assignments. Like interns, recipients of this scholarship act in a variety of roles such as reporters, radio hosts, photographers, designers, writers, programmers, developers, etc.
The following opportunities are for students with significant prior experience and participation in Student Media:
Junior Leadership (Scholarship Position): Junior leaders are expected to help Student Media fulfill the vision of engaging, provoking, inspiring and connecting the campus community by participating in the content creation process and assisting senior leadership in oversight of specific operations of Student Media platforms. Students who apply for and are selected to receive a Junior Leadership Scholarship may fill the roles listed below.
Chronicle News: Assistant news editor, assistant sports editor, wasatch editor
K-UTE Broadcast: News producer, sports producer, producer (for various shows)
Student Media Marketing: Events/promotions director (two positions), recruiting director
Other: Video director (two positions – editorial content and marketing/advertising)
Senior Leadership: Senior leaders are expected to help Student Media fulfill the vision of engaging, provoking, inspiring and connecting the campus community by guiding the content creation process and overseeing specific operations of Student Media platforms. The nature of this experiential learning award gives a student hands-on leadership experience and a broad background in media content creation and operations. Students who apply for and are selected to receive a Senior Leadership Scholarship may fill the roles listed below.
Chronicle News: News editor, opinion editor, sports editor, arts editor, photo editor, production manager
DigitalU: Social manager, analytics manager, web manager, app manager, content manager
K-UTE Broadcast: Music programming director, talk programming director, operations director
