The Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights closed its investigation into the University of Utah on Dec. 10, 2019, dismissing an allegation that the U created a sexually hostile environment for students. Instead, the examination found that “the U took various systemic steps to improve its Title IX policies and procedures,” including “hiring an experienced Title IX coordinator, hiring additional university staff to investigate complaints, revision of Title IX policies specific to handling sexual harassment complaints, and revision of the university’s notice of Nondiscrimination.”

The investigation was opened on June 23, 2016, and the U responded to requests for information and documentation by the deadline of July 13, 2016. Additionally, the U hosted OCR investigators on campus and facilitated opportunities for students to speak with OCR representatives in spring 2017.

The U remains committed to fostering a professional working and learning environment by implementing and enforcing policies on nondiscrimination. Those who have experienced, or are aware of, harassment or discrimination involving members of the U community should report it to the U’s Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action. The office investigates these claims, directs individuals to resources and support services, and recommends outcomes aimed at remedying the situation and preventing reoccurrences.
