Guests of all ages are invited to join in this spooky rendition of the “Haunted Orchestra XVI: The Power of the Dark Side,” presented by the Utah Philharmonia and maestro Robert Baldwin, Oct. 26-27 at 7:30 p.m. in Libby Gardner Hall. In addition to many surprises, the Philharmonia will be featuring the music of legendary composer John Williams. Audiences will get to experience the full power of the force found in familiar tunes such as “Parade of the Ewoks,” “The Force Awakens,” “The Imperial March” and many more pieces from the beloved “Star Wars” films.

This beloved concert has been a tradition that audiences look forward to each year. All musicians in the ensemble dress in creative costumes and Baldwin always keeps his costume secret from everyone (including his students) until the night of the performance. Last year he dressed as Hamilton, and other favorite costumes include Captain Kirk, a devil and a mad doctor.

While the theme of the concert is “Star Wars,” the orchestra will also play a variety of other selections including Stravinsky’s “Soldier’s Tale” and Paul Dukas’ “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” The latter is most well-known for being featured in the Disney film, “Fantasia.” Principal bass player Justin Morgan stated that while this piece is very accessible to audiences, it is “the most complex score on the program.” Bassoonist Kylie Lincoln mentioned this piece is commonly used to test bassoonist in elite auditions because of its complexity.

Oboe player Robin Vorkink said that what makes this concert a unique experience is its inclusion of many art forms. Aside from the costumes worn by the musicians and conductors, the stage is adorned with decorations for a fun visual spectacle. Additionally, each year the Philharmonia invites the ballet department to perform with them, which they will be doing on the aforementioned “Soldier’s Tale.” This concert also features the instrumental conducting graduate students more than in any other concert throughout the year.

This concert is one of the most well-attended School of Music events. It allows people to connect with music they know and love and allows them to participate in some Halloween festivities. Audience members are encouraged to dress up and bring the whole family to join in on the fun. Children will also be featured in a costume parade.
