piece of University of Utah Health’s Campus Transformation. Participants celebrated this important milestone at the Area E Opening Celebration on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019. The celebration was also an opportunity to recognize U of U Health’s 10th consecutive year ranking in the top 10 for the Vizient Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award. This is one honor that belongs to each U of U Health employee.
“We are excited to have built a structure which creates a beautiful space for our patients and staff so they can provide exceptional patient care,” says Dan Lundergarn, U of U Health chief operating officer.
Area E is a two-phase construction project, with the completion of phase one. The nearly 300,000 square foot, $131.5-million facility will create convenient access for patients who require world-class expertise for their care, but for whom a hospital stay is unnecessary.
“Area E is an important piece of our growth strategy,” says Alison Gaffney, executive director of U of U Health Services Lines, Ancillary and Support Services. “Area E will encompass clinics, operating rooms, inpatient units, as well as a plethora of support services in a new convenient and well thought out building that serves our patients, faculty and staff very well.”
Levels one and two, completed as part of phase one, will house clinics and a number of support services. Phase two includes additional support services on level three and inpatient units on levels five and six. Level four will be shell space ready to be used as University of Utah Health continues to grow. University of Utah’s Campus Transformation was born from the need to replace the aging School of Medicine. Seeing a moment to think big, U of U Health leadership created a plan to not only replace the School of Medicine, but expand and enhance how U of U Health achieves its three-part mission of patient care, education and research.
Along with Area E, our Campus Transformation also includes the Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital, the Sugar House Health Center, the Hospital Infill Project, the Medical Education & Discovery Crossroads and the recently completed Care Navigation in South Jordan.
