BANNED BLOOD: WHY NOT EVERYONE CAN DONATE

Although it may vary a bit from state to state, a one-year ban may apply to those who have received tattoos or body piercing, acupuncture, an accidental needle stick or have come in contact with someone else’s blood.  If you’ve traveled to an area that may put you at risk for malaria (or have had it), or been treated for syphilis or gonorrhea you must wait a year. The American Red Cross has a long criteria listing what determines whether someone is eligible or not for donating blood.

  1. Thank you for the update on Zika virus safety! I am concerned, however, that this announcement, as with many of the Zika prevention/awareness materials I’ve seen, places so much of the responsibility for Zika protection solely on women. Women living in or traveling to high-risk areas do not just spontaneously become pregnant. Along with phrasing such as ” pregnant women are advised to use a condom or abstain from having sex with a male partner who may have Zika,” it is equally important to emphasize to men living in or traveling to high-risk areas that THEY “use a condom or abstain from having sex with female partners who have any chance of becoming pregnant.” Please help reinforce the fact that this needs to be a joint effort involving both participants in sexual activities that may result in conception.
