2018-2019 Student Regent applications due March 27[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″]
[/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]Since 1977, the Governor has appointed a student from an institution in the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) to represent Utah students on the State Board of Regents. The Student Regent is a voting member of the Board and serves at the Governor’s appointment for one year. Any eligible USHE student is encouraged to apply. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- The Student Regent must be an enrolled student at a USHE institution during the 2018-19 academic year.
- Student body presidents serving during the 2018-19 academic year are not eligible for this position.
- The Student Regent is expected to attend all meetings of the Board. Currently schedule meetings are found on the agenda page.
- Applicants are requested to submit a letter of interest, a resume, and 2 letters of recommendation.
Student body presidents will vote to select three matriculated students as finalists from among the pool of applicants for consideration by the Governor. All applicants will be notified before June 30, 2018. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, March 27, 2018.

EXAMINING THE URBAN-RURAL DIVIDE[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″]
[/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]Honors students at the University of Utah will co-host a forum with Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox at the Hinckley Institute (Building 73, room 110) to address the difficulties of the urban-rural divide on Monday, April 2 at 5 p.m.
As part of a Praxis Lab, students are addressing issues related to access to education beyond high school in rural and urban areas of Utah. Overall, the students are interested in helping to expand educational opportunities for kids across the state. This decision was motivated by their interest to address some of the complex differences between rural and urban areas related to economic opportunities, community sustainability and social problems.[/bs_col][/bs_row]
U HONORS NOVELIST AMITAV GHOSH[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″]
[/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]The University of Utah’s Environmental Humanities graduate program will award Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh with the inaugural Utah Award in the Environmental Humanities on March 26 at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Main Library.
Ghosh has written 10 novels and several books of non-fiction including 2016’s “The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable.” Ghosh’s work has been translated into 20 languages and published in myriad outlets including The New Yorker, The New Republic and The New York Times. His writing focuses on environmental consciousness in the most difficult circumstances of a multicultural, globalized and interdependent world.
The $10,000 award will become an annual celebration of environmental leadership and expression and honor those who solve the planet’s environmental problems using the tools of the humanities such as creative expression, scholarly research, popular art forms and advocacy.[/bs_col][/bs_row]
THE GREAT SHAKEOUT DRILL[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″]
[/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]The Great Utah ShakeOut is an opportunity for our University campus to learn about overall preparedness plans, what to do during earthquakes, and then practice those skills. Watch for a campus alert on April 19, 2018, at 10:15 a.m., encouraging everyone to practice drop, cover and hold on. Practice and reinforcement of these protective actions can help prevent injury when the earth starts to shake. Remember, it is not the shaking of the ground that causes death or injury, it is the objects that are falling that will be most dangerous.

SUMMER TECHNOLOGY CAMP[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″]
[/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]The School of Computing’s GREAT summer technology camps are open for registration. These camps have programs for upper elementary, middle school, and high school ages with topics in computer programming, game development, graphics and robotics. UKIDS SUMMER CAMP 2018[bs_row class=”row”][bs_col class=”col-sm-4″]
[/bs_col][bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]Calling all kiddos ages 5-8. Join us this summer at UKids – Presidents Circle for Summer Camp 2018.
First session will begin May 14 and end June 20, second session will begin June 21 and end Aug. 1. There will be a $100 discount for registering for both sessions.
The camps will feature two weekly field trips, including such places as Hogle Zoo and Discovery Gateway, developmentally appropriate curriculum and lots of opportunities for adventure. Registration will open early April so mark your calendars.
