Dancing calligraphy

The company is on a U.S. tour.

Mainland China’s first professional modern dance company, Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC), is internationally renowned for their exquisite and captivating performances. Hailed by The New York Times as “one of the big success stories of international dance,” the company has been invited to numerous international festivals in dozens of countries and regions. Its works have won critical acclaim and overwhelming responses from audiences and critics around the world.

On their current U.S. tour, GMDC will perform one of the most popular pieces in their repertoire. “Beyond Calligraphy” is a poem of movements, which are developed from the stylistic essence of different Chinese scripts. It comprises five dances named after the five different script styles in Chinese calligraphy.

Since its debut performance in 2005, “Beyond Calligraphy” has been performed more than 100 times around the world. The work, choreographed by Liu Qi, has won awards for outstanding choreography, lighting design, and production. The Washington Post describes the piece as “full of meditative grace, sharp, cut crystal physicality, and languid dignity.”

The performance, which is being presented by UtahPresents in partnership with the Confucius Institute, will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. at Kingsbury Hall. Prior to the public performance, the company will perform a student matinee for local school children, as well as a panel discussion with the Confucius Institute and a mini-performance at a local elementary school with a Mandarin language immersion program.
